Getting Here

The Fire Station is located in Sunderland city centre, which has excellent transport links – getting here is simple and hassle-free via car, Metro, train, bus, bike or air.

Car

With 11 car parks in the city centre, eight of which have been awarded ‘Safer Parking Award’ status, getting here by car couldn’t be easier. Our nearest car parks are:

  • St. Mary’s Car Park, SR1 3AH
  • Bridges Car Park, SR1 3PZ

Accessible Parking

Vehicles displaying a disabled blue badge may park free of charge and without a time limit in any of Sunderland City Council’s on and off-street parking bays except the following:

  • St. Mary’s Car Park (normal charges apply)
  • Sunniside Multi Storey Car Park (normal charges apply)
  • Prince Street/South Street (private permit holders only)

There are on-street parking bays on High Street West, outside The Fire Station.

 

Tyne and Wear Metro

You can get to and around Sunderland from Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside and South Tyneside quickly and easily by using Metro. The nearest stations to us are Sunderland, Park Lane and University.

 

Train

Sunderland’s railway station is a five-minute walk from The Fire Station. LNER, Northern Rail and Grand Central Rail all operate routes through Sunderland.

 

Bus and Coach

Sunderland city centre has excellent bus networks with connections from nearby areas including Newcastle, Gateshead, South Shields, Durham, Washington and Houghton-le-Spring. The Fire Station is a five-minute walk to Park Lane Interchange as well as numerous bus stops around the city centre.

For longer journeys by coach, National Express runs numerous routes into Park Lane Interchange.

 

Bike

Sunderland’s city centre and nearby areas have many public cycle routes for those wanting to get around by bike. The Fire Station has storage for 20 bikes in the Parade Ground – these will be accessible from early 2022. There are also five bike rails in front of the building to the right-hand side.

 

Air

If you are travelling internationally, Sunderland is connected by major airlines via Newcastle International Airport and Teesside International Airport – both of which are less than an hour’s drive away, or an hour from Newcastle Airport on the Metro.
